Jesuit High School Sacramento football is officially underway with a new season. Last week, the Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) teams faced De La Salle, El Cerrito, Pittsburg in a scrimmage, while the freshman lost a close season opener, 21-28, against Oak Ridge High School.
The Varsity and JV teams are coming off of perfect Delta League seasons in 2021 that saw them each ranked No. 1. Despite having a smaller JV team than in years past, Head JV Football Coach Jamo Luhrsen is encouraged by all the summer pre-season work. He believes that the team has a strong lead with Jack Patock ’25 at QB.
“I expect our team to be really good and mature in to varsity caliber players as the season unfolds,” Coach Luhrsen said. “Our offensive and defensive line looks to be our strength this season.”
Heading into the season, the Sacramento Bee ranks the Varsity team No. 6 amongst Sacramento area high schools, noting that “17 starters graduated from 2021.” Head Varsity Coach Marlon Blanton explains how the team is building a fundamental foundation in this early part of the season.
“We are working on building better relationships with each other, so we can better work together,” Coach Blanton said.
Freshman football Coach Philip Nuxull shares that the outing against Oak Ridge was for many in the large team squad a “first experience playing contact football.”
“Although the team was behind 28-7 at halftime, the coaches were encouraged that the players played inspired football in the second half to make the final score 28-21,” Coach Nuxoll said. “With each week of experience, we are looking for increased improvement with this group.”
The Marauders continue to kick off their season as they travel to Reno to face Bishop Manogue on August 25 and 26. Season passes are now available.
