The beginning of the school year means the beginning of fall sports, and with every team enjoying success last year, Jesuit High School’s athletic teams seek return with similar achievements.

Last year, Jesuit Water Polo won the Delta League Championship, only losing in the Section Championship game to their rival Saint Mary’s High School.

For Jackson Wacker ’20, he hopes the team will return the Section Championship game, though with a different result this time..

“Like every year, our goal is to win sections,” Jackson said. “We have a lot of guys brand new to varsity this year, so we’re really looking for those guys to step up and contribute, as well as create great team chemistry and atmosphere.”

Water polo’s season will soon be in full swing as they have already had scrimmages on Aug. 29 and 31, showing up strong in both. Their first official game against Rocklin High School is on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. here at Jesuit.

Also coming off a highly successful season last year is the Jesuit Cross Country team, who got a league and section title while also placing 5th in the state meet.

Jesuit Cross Country has had a long history of accomplishment including League, Section, and State Championships. For much of that history, Coach Lange has been at the helm, and this year he expects a season that reflects the program’s storied past.

“The coaches want all our runners to stay healthy while getting as fit as possible and competing to the best of their abilities,” Coach Lange said. “This hopefully translates to League and Section Championships and a state meet podium appearance.”

Also having high expectations for the season is Chase Gordon ’20. Chase is a long-time cross country runner who also thinks that the team has a shot at winning the state meet.

“We want to win league and sections and hopefully place in the top three in the State Championship,” Chase said. “We have tons of young potential, and we are hoping to do well this season and show the young runners how all the hard work in practice will pay off.”

Cross country’s first meet was the Oakmont Invitational on the morning of Aug. 31, at Maidu Park Roseville. There, they beat out other leading regional competition to start their season with a win.

With both Cross Country and Water Polo starting, make sure to show your support to both teams as they begin their seasons.
