On Saturday, August 19, the 2023 Jesuit Marauders opened their season with a strong showing at the Sierra Invitational at Sierra College in Rocklin, capturing team titles in the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior races while finishing 4th in the Senior Race.
In the opening freshman race the team, led by Individual winner Matthew Ogilvie, finished 1-2-3-5-18 = 29 points to easily win over 2nd place Oak Ridge (62 points). Lucas Alberts, Rafael Jopson, Ryan Tait, Jadon Fuentes, Griffin Smith and Max Hernandez rounded out the top 7 Marauder finishers.
In the sophomore race, Drake Hoferer and Isaac Abbott ran side-by-side up front for most of the race to lead the sophomore team to a convincing win over Oak Ridge 44 to 82. The team, led by individual winner Drake Hoferer finished 1-2-12-13-16 = 44 points (22) (23), showing good depth as 6 and 7 man finished ahead of Oak Ride number 5 man. George Vlahos, Nick Ryan, Aaron Beasley, Jaypal Reddy, and John Barreiro rounded out the top 7 Jesuit finishers.
The Junior race turned out to be the fastest race of the day time-wise. In this race, Jesuit’s depth was on full display as the team led by 3rd place finisher Chase Cressman went 1-3-4-8-11 = 27 points (12)(14) to distance itself from 2nd place Rocklin’s 97 points. Navin Kadel, Trevor Felix, Brady Blum, Robson Fuentes, Daniel Krotine, and George Srabian were the top 7 Jesuit finishers.
As the weather got hot, the Senior race was the final race of the day. The Marauders were led by Declan Higgins’ 2nd place and Jonah Reynolds 13th place individual finish as the team went 1-11-26-27-32 = 97 points (34)(52) and finished 4th behind Oak Ridge (56), Whitney (57), and Rodrigues (89).
In a combined simulated race based on individual results of all races, Jesuit had the fastest top 5 team time of the day. Chase Cressman - 10:15, Drake Hoferer – 10:27, Isaac Abbott – 10:30, Declan Higgins – 10:33, and Matthew Ogilvie – 10:40 resulted in a team time of 52:27 and score of 35 points, over 2 minutes faster than the next team Oak Ridge’s time of 54:31 and score of 115 points. Jesuit’s 6th and 7th finishers, Navin Kadel - 10:48, and Jonah Reynolds – 10:52 were faster than Oak Ridge’s number 4 man.
