Jesuit High School is looking forward to the Spring 2024 tennis season under the direction of new head coach Matthew Brunner ‘01, current tennis director at Rollingwood YMCA. Joining Coach Brunner will be Andy Pons ‘06, as an assistant coach. Coach Pons will take the lead for all away matches.
Coach Matthew Brunner shared, “I am beyond thrilled to begin this chapter as head coach of Jesuit Tennis. It has been 22 years since I graduated from JHS, and that senior year was a fabled one for the team. Now to be able to circle back and provide leadership and development to a program that gave so much to me is beyond words. This is going to be the first of many great years for Jesuit Tennis, a year where you will feel proud to have been a part of, and will be the kickstart of continued excellence in years to come. From my JHS tennis experience to NCAA championships, and my full-time tennis teaching in junior development since 2009, there is a lot of experience that I am excited to bring to the table to help make this program as special as it should be.”
A 2001 graduate of Jesuit, Coach Brunner had a very successful high school career which included four section titles. He continued to play collegiately at UC Santa Cruz. While there, he had the opportunity to play under legendary hall of famer Bob Hansen who coached the program to 24 national championships during his 30-year tenure. Brunner was a member of the 2005 team that was the first ever in Division III history to win the "Triple Crown," securing national team, individual singles, and individual doubles championships. Brunner himself was the 2005 NCAA doubles champion with teammate Matt Seeberger. In Santa Cruz, he began to gather professional coaching experience at the Santa Cruz Tennis Academy. After two years in Europe, he has been teaching full-time since 2009 and is now a staff member at the renowned JMG Academy.
Assistant Coach Pons is also a Jesuit alum from the class of 2006. He currently is the school’s Community Safety Specialist on campus which will allow him to get to know the student-athletes in their academic setting as well as on the court. Coach Pons spent four seasons on the Varsity Tennis team at Jesuit while winning three section titles. In addition, he has been a private instructor on and off for over a decade.
