This past Saturday, Jesuit captured Delta League Championships in both the Frosh/Soph and Varsity Divisions. In the Frosh/Soph race, the outcome was never in doubt as Jesuit’s depth was on full display with the Marauders taking 5 or the top 7 places (1-2-4-5-7) to win with a point total of 19 points to second place Davis’s 51 points. The team was led by race winner Sophomores Preston Connor 10:32, Tyler Offerman 10:35, Cameron Cleland 10:51, and Gavin Joaquin 10:55. Freshmen Cole Rasmussen 10:56 and Gabe Giannini 11:12 together with Julian Curiale 11:21 rounded out the top 7.
The varsity race was a battle from start to finish between Jesuit and Davis. The Section’s top 2 teams did not disappoint those who came to watch a quality race. With Jesuit senior Matt Strangio taking the early lead but running conservatively, a significant pack of runners mostly from Jesuit and Davis along with individuals from the other schools trailed closely behind. Over the first half of the race, Davis runners moved up with Davis holding a team lead over Jesuit at the half-mile, mile, and 1.5 miles marks. With Strangio comfortably in the lead and cruising, it would be up to Jesuit’s second through 7 runners to step up and reel in the Davis runners over the second half of the race. With just a quarter mile to go, the outcome was still in doubt with Strangio in the lead but Davis occupying places 2,3, and 4. Over the last 400, Junior Spencer Pickren was able to overtake one Davis runner to finish in 4, Sophomore Braden King, overtook a Sheldon runner to finish 6, and Freshman Jake Swanson and Junior Michael Chambers finished just a few seconds ahead of Davis’s number 4 and 5 runners to clinch another League title for Jesuit. Seniors Nick Salonites and Chase Gordon rounded out the top 7 for the Maruaders.
Jesuit will compete this coming weekend at the Sub-Sections hoping to qualify teams at all 4 levels for the Section Championship taking place at Willow Hill in Folsom on Saturday, November 16.
