Jesuit Varsity rugby got back out of the field this weekend hosting Mother Lode. It was the first game back for over a year for both teams and it showed. Both teams made errors, but they were more than willing to keep the ball moving and try to dominate the contact area. Mother Lode drew first blood when Jesuit missed a tackle close to the line and Mother Lode capitalized.
Jesuit was stuck defending for long periods, but once they broke out, they were dangerous. Senior Fullback Zach Coss leveled the game and Junior center Roanin Krieger also scored and converted to give the Marauders a little breathing room. Jesuit continued to play long stretches of defense and got lucky a couple of times with mistakes hurting Motherlode in close.
Senior Flyhalf David Hause started to pull the strings and the backline started to run from everywhere. Mother Lode had a hard time with the speed of ball and Hause was able to score twice. Krieger converted one and then hit a penalty to take the score to 29-5.
Mother Lode would not quit and used some tactical kicks into space to score twice. Senior Center Sebastian Torres scored a well taken team try that was converted by Krieger to end the game.
Final Score – Jesuit 36 Motherlode 19
“First of all, the Jesuit coaches want to thank the school administration and the parents for making this game possible. It was a good clean, physical game and both teams learned some valuable lessons. Considering we had a few players on the field who just came out on Monday we are a work in progress, but it was great to see the players back on the field.” – Coach Acosta
