Yesterday, Jesuit traveled to Angels Camp for the Sub-Section meet to determine who advances to the Section Championship on November 11 at Willow Hill in Folsom. The Varsity team raced first in what was largely a formality as 10 teams advance with Jesuit, Vacaville, and Whitney the 3 top ranked teams. For the first 2 miles of the race, the Jesuit 7 man team ran together towards the front of the pack to avoid the dust. They were given the option to race the last mile or maintain a tempo pace with most opting to race a little bit. At the finish Jesuit placed all 7 runners in the top 14 and finished as the top qualifying team with 31 points to second place Vacaville’s 121, Rocklin’s 145, Whitney’s 148, and Granite Bay’s 157. Jesuit will be in the same league next year with all but Vacaville as well as Davis which should make for some very competitive league races in the coming years. Drake Hoferer lead the Marauders, followed by Jonah Reynolds, Declan Higgins, Chase Cressman, Navin Kadel, Matt Ogilvie, and Isaac Abbott cruising in just ahead of Vacaville’s number 1 and 2 runners.
Next up was the Division 1 and 2 JV Race with Jesuit and Davis considered to be the deepest squads. Again the goal was to qualify (top 6 teams) going out at fast enough to be towards the front of the pack to avoid the dust and control the race. The race went according to plan with Jesuit and Davis taking 13 of the top 15 places at the finish and the Blue Devils coming away with a 3 point victory over the Marauders 28 to 31. Vacaville finished 3rd with 110, Whitney 4th in 157, and Bella Vista 5th with 176. Freshman Rafael Jopson led the Marauders finishing 2nd overall, followed by Brady Blum, Kyle Jakary, Robson Fuentes, Daniel Krotine, Lucas Alberts, and Mitchell Sullivan.
The third race of the day for Jesuit was the Sophomore boys Division 2 race with Vacaville and Whitney the main competition. Jesuit’s top six runners ran together for much of the race and finished with an 18 second gap from 1st to 5th man to finish with second with 42 points to Vacaville’s 39 points, Whitney finished 3rd with 106 and River Valley 4th 114. The Marauders were led by Sophomore Nick Ryan’s 4th place finish, followed closely by Jaypal Reddy, John Barreiro, Noah Nast, Jackson Johns, and George Vlahos. Kegan Butler grabbed the 7th and final spot, narrowly edging out teammate Aiden Smith to advance to sections.
The final race of the day was the freshman boys Division 1 and 2 race. With the top three freshman racing in Varsity and JV and the 4th man out with injury, the team would have to work hard to advance to the section meet. This past week the freshman group has been hampered with illness as well as various ailments which made their task all the more challenging. In the end, Jesuit was edged out for the 6th and final team qualifying spot by Rio Americano 149 to 150 with three tenths of a second the time difference between the Rio and Jesuit runner that could have flipped the score. It doesn’t get much closer than that. Griffin Smith led the Freshman team with a 7th place finish and will advance to the Section meet as an individual. Micah Olmstead, Drew Eandi, Nick Ramos, Colin Cavanaugh, Andrew Hamm, and Jadon Fuentes rounded out the top 7 Marauders.
Next Week the Marauders will compete for a Division 2 Section Championship in what promises to be a very competitive race.
